Winter
Closure of FSR 614 Letter Talking Points:
- FSR (Forest Service
Road) 614 has become an important route to skiers
and especially snowshoers using the Fourth of
July Winter Sports Area.
- The Panhandle Nordic
Club Ski & Snowshoe Club has been grooming
and signing the road for over five-years as part
of the Fourth of July Park & Ski Area.
- Traditionally,
non-motorized winter use has been located south
of Interstate 90, while motorized use has been
located north and realistically everywhere else
on the Coeur d'Alene River District.
- Non-motorized users,
skiers and snowshoers want an area they can
pursue their winter sports without the
disturbance of motorized use with its noise
carrying miles and its fumes fouling the air
nearby.
- ATVs are beginning to
use FSR 614 through the ski and snowshoe area
during the winter months.
- ATV activity disrupts
the Panhandle Nordic Ski and Snowshoe Club's
ability to groom the routes along FSR 614 or
reach other trails for maintenance.
- ATV activity intrudes on
the non-motorized ski and snowshoe winter
experience with fumes and noise.
- I (we) urge the Forest
Service to close FSR 614 following the hunting
season and to keep it closed through the winter
months and early spring thaw until it can be
opened in a condition conducive to use without
deterioration.
- If you have written the
Forest Service before on this issue during the
travel planning process remind them, that you
have made this request earlier.
