August 5 and 6, 2023 Meet August 5th at Super 1 in Hayden at 7 AM This is a trip in to the much less visited north end of the Scotchmans Peak Wild Area. Given the distance into the area via Bonners Ferry and then to Troy Montana, it makes the most since to stay overnight at the Forest Service’s Spar Lake Campground allowing time for two hikes. The first hike is up the Spar Creek trail to Little Spar Lake in the designated wild area. The hike boasts the least gradient of any hike in the Scotchmans Peak Area. The more ambitious may want to venture further up the trail to a spectacular overlook that views the lake from above and up to Scotchmans 2 the peak directly north of Scotchmans Peak. The group would camp overnight at the Spar Lake Campground. The facility requires the typical Forest Service campground charge with a seniors discount if you have a Golden Eagle Pass. Since Spar Lake Campground is not on the Forest Services Reservation system (reservations.gov), it appears that it is first come first serve campground. The second day hike will be up Spar Peak. The trail climbs from near the campground up Spar Peak. The top provides spectacular views into the Scotchmans Peak Area and down on Spar Lake. Participants are welcome one or both days, but will need to meet us at the campground on the second day. Let me know if you are planning to participate at Whitefish48@Yahoo.com
